What does PDT with Metvix involve?
We do not treat any lesions with PDT without prior biopsy (small punch sample taken) to pathologically confirm the type and depth of tumor. We also use Ultrasound imaging to confirm the extend and depths of the lesion.
Lesion preparation:
- 1 or 2 days before the actual Metvix treatment, the site will be prepared by removing scales, crust and dead cells. This preparation will ensure a better penetration of Metvix into the cancerous tissue.
Application of Metivx:
- The cancerous field will be marked and a precise mould of the area formed with dental silicon. This technique allows the cream to sit on the skin in an even 1mm layer during the application time for maximum absorption. The mould will be filled with Metvix, applied to the cancerous field and covered with some dressing. This application needs to remain in place for 3 hours. During this time, the patient is free to leave the surgery.
Exposure to Aktilite:
- After 3 hours, the dressing and silicon will be removed and the site cleaned. Before the illumination, we record a photographic image with a special UV lens to confirm the extent of sensitizer uptake.
- The treatment site is then exposed to Aktilite for 7-9 minutes. For safety reasons, the patient will require to wear special goggles during that time.
- Treatment with METVIX PDT consists of two sessions one week apart.
To determine that the treatment was successful, we monitor the treated lesion 3 months and 12 months after the PDT treatment with Ultrasound imaging.Â
